Johnny Reid – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – As fall sports are getting off and running, the Mustang cross-country teams are preparing for their upcoming season. The first meet will take place at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Jim Ryun Season Opener at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

Both boys and girls teams are coming off of very successful seasons and will try to replicate and improve on what they did last year.

The boys’ varsity team finished as runners-up in the state for 4A last year. That marks the best finish in the LRHS boys’ cross-country school history.

Although they are losing their top two runners from last year, John Rivera and Brice Easton, they are still returning with a strong core.

Senior Andrew Dean stated, “I think we can have a very good year this year. Top five in the state is certainly achievable and I think we have pretty good depth as well.”

The girls team is also coming off of an impressive year, finishing 14th at the state meet in class 4A after not qualifying for states the year before.

They have five runners returning from the varsity team last year and have many incoming runners as well that should make the team stronger.

Sophomore varsity runner Anna Stock commented, “I’m excited for the new season and all the new runners coming in.”

After completing one and two-mile time trials, along with an inter-squad meet of the normal 5k distance, the Mustangs are ready to kick off the season.
