(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS swim team started the new season with its first official practice on Monday, Aug. 14 at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA pool.

On Friday, Aug. 11, 53 new and returning swimmers gathered for an open try-out to determine placement in new practice groups based on ability. Despite the delay during the try-out due to weather, all swimmers who attended were able to swim that day and were all offered a position on the team.

Head coach Julie Santiago said in an announcement that the team has welcomed LRHS social studies teacher Kyle Steinberg as the new assistant coach, and that she was impressed by the new swimmers at the first practice.

“We have an amazing group of Mustang Swimmers. It’s going to be a great season,” said Santiago.  The team worked on different strokes, basic drills, and a series of short sets to help rebuild endurance and to get used to swimming competitively.

The team is scheduled to continue the regular season for the next eight weeks. The swim season includes daily practices from Monday-Friday and its first competition is scheduled for Aug. 26.

This year’s swimmers on the LRHS swim team hope to take on the varsity sport and live up to the legacy the team has left for them in the past.
