Mustang GSA organizing for the year

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is seeking members for 2017-18.  The club will host an introductory party at 2:05 p.m., Aug. 18 in room 565.

LRHS Advanced Placement (AP) Government teacher Ben Hall, sponsors the GSA. This will be his third year hosting the club, which started back in 2015. Students are welcome to sign up and join anytime during the year in room 565.

After family members told him that they felt isolated from the community, Hall formed an idea that eventually became a club at LRHS. He believes that everyone should be recognized as a whole person, and not put into society’s boxes.

“I lead discussion, provide refreshments, and create meetings,” said Hall. “I also have a government council composed of three students who lead the vote on certain projects and fundraisers.”

Hall also wants to have GSA work with other programs to complete projects around the local community. A goal of GSA this year is to work with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) homeless community.

Hall encouraged all students to find ways to get involved at LRHS.

“I think it’s important for all students to get involved with clubs and their communities,” he said.

GSA is still growing as a club every year, and Hall hopes that more people come out.

“I hope this is our best year yet,” Hall commented.
