Danielle Kennedy – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS staff welcomed school counselor Melody West to the campus this year. We asked her some questions about how her year-long experience at LRHS.
MA: Were you a guidance counselor anywhere before LRHS?
MW: Yes – two years in Texas. One year at the LIFE program through Horizons last year (my first year in Florida).
MA: What is the hardest thing about being a counselor?
MW: Time management. Also, when students come to see me who are very sad and/or they have attempted to hurt themselves; I tend to take that home with me. It weighs very heavy on my heart.
MA: What has been the most challenging for you during your first year here at LRHS?
MW: Well, there have been a few. The large student load; I am used to about 200-250. We also deal with dual enrollment classes, Florida educational standards as opposed to Texas standards.
MA: What has been your favorite thing about this year?
MW: Getting to know the staff and the kids .
MA: What is your favorite memory from this year?
MW: I don’t have any specific one. But it’s nice when parents tell you how much they appreciate you being there for their kids.
