Mustang track looks back on winning year

Jonathan Reid – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS track and field varsity teams competed in the FHSAA State championship this past weekend at IMG Academy.

Both teams experienced success as the girls finished fourth overall in class 4A while the boys also finished fourth in 4A.

The teams were led by overwhelming efforts by seniors Sophia Falco and John Rivera, as they scored the majority of the points for their respective teams.

Falco repeated as the state champion in the long jump and also crushed the competition in the triple jump, beating second place by almost three feet.

Falco also placed second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash.

Junior Karen Lyvers also turned in a great performance in the pole vault by getting fifth place and a personal best height after getting fourth at the regional meet.

Rivera kept the boys in contention for a top three finish for most of the meet as he won his first state championship in the 800-meter run. He also placed second in the 1600-meter run.

He also led the 4×800 meter team to a win, as he turned about an 8-meter lead when he got the baton into a 12 second victory, capturing the IMG record in the process with a time of 7:53.45.

The other members of the relay team also performed well as sophomore Jonathan Reid placed seventh in both the 800 and 1600 and junior Andrew Dean placed eighth in the 800.

Junior jumper Harry Barthelemy got on the podium with an eighth place finish in the long jump, while senior Sam Jackson placed sixth in the shot put.

After winning the relay, Rivera stated, “the connection we have is special, but when I’m out there with my team I’m fighting for them and I know they’re doing the same for me. It’s a great feeling.”
