(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS senior Sam Hester has been a noteworthy presence on the basketball court, and thanks now to injury he’s easy to spot in the halls.   Hester has been on the varsity basketball team since his freshman year.  He was also the first LRHS student to reach 1000 points in his high school career.

LRHS senior Sam Hester wheels around after a state semi-final basketball injury

During the state semi-final Hester sprained his ankle within the first five minutes of the game.  He got off the court and had the trainer wrap his ankle.

“I could walk right after it happened and I tried to play,” said Hester.

Coach Jeremy Schiller put Hester in three more times for no more than two minutes at a time.  Hester said that he just really wanted to make it to the championship.

Hester went to the emergency room the next day to get an x-ray.  The doctors told him nothing was wrong so he rested it until the next week.  He went back in a week later and they told him he needed an MRI.  After that, they said that he had torn ligaments in his ankle.

Hester was in a boot for a week until he could get his cast.  Hester now has to wear a cast for the next four weeks.

Hester said, “It has been a fun ride the past four years, I just wish it could have ended differently.”
