Jazz bands kick off week with competition

Markella Paradissis-Wagner – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- On Monday LRHS Jazz Bands will head to Southeast High School to participate in Music Performance Assessments (MPAs.)

After performing on stage and sight reading for judges, those competing in MPAs will receive scores of Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent, or Superior. Jazz band 1 plays at 8:15 p.m. while jazz 2 performs at 6:45 p.m.

“We’re going to do the best we can,” said jazz 2 trumpet player Anthony Pistella, junior.

Jazz 1 is the advanced class while Jazz 2 is the intermediate band for players who already have experience.

MPAs are important because they require the individual musicians to work hard in practicing their music and improving their playing. MPAs also test the band as a whole as the judges give feedback crucial to improvement.

“It’s the pressure of being evaluated that pushes us to near perfection,” said LRHS band director Ron Lambert.
