(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – With National Dance Team Championships (NDTC) coming up on Feb. 3-6, the LRHS Silver Stars Dance Team is working long and hard on their two routines.
The team will have their second “can shake” fundraiser Jan. 20-21 at the Publix, 11205 E State Road 70
to raise more money to help with their nationals funds. A can shake is a fundraiser when the team dances in front of Publix and receives donations from the community.
Senior and Silver Stars co-captain Jessica Roberts said, “I’m excited to go to nationals with my team for the last time, especially because I feel very confident that we will do well and I know we’ll have a lot of fun.”
The groups pom routine, which is a style of dance that is high in energy, consists of sharp movements, includes many formation changes, and dancers hold poms in their hands as they dance, was choreographed coach Kourtney Kalahar.
Their routine won first at United Dance Association’s (UDA) annual Dance Camp this summer where the team competed against seven other high school teams.
Their jazz routine, which is a slower and more emotional dance that combines fast and slow as well as sharp and soft movement, was choreographed by both Kalahar and a guest choreographer Dance Studio teacher Kaylin Dalton.
To practice performing, the team danced their jazz routine at the Jan. 10 boys basketball team against Palmetto High. The Stars are planning to perform their pom routine at the Jan. 20 basketball game against Sarasota High.
Silver Star Madison Cartano, freshman, said, “I’m both excited and nervous to go to nationals for the first time.”
Along with the basketball game performances, their regular practices during the week, and two extra rehearsals, the team is getting very serious and prepared for nationals with hopes of getting into the final round of the competition.
