Boys win cross country regionals, girls advance to states

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS boy’s and girl’s cross country teams are continuing their successful seasons. On Friday, Oct. 28, both teams placed high at the Class 4A Region 2 meet and qualify to go to the state finals.

The boys team placed first with 85 points and an average time of 17:20.91. Senior John Rivera placed fifth with a time of 16:53.92, qualifying for the state meet as an individual.

Top 15 individuals and top six teams qualify for states.

Kyle Wray, junior, placed 17th, Johnathan Reid, sophomore, placed 18th, senior Brice Easton placed 20th, junior Andrew Dean placed 36th, freshman Calvin Drake placed 66, and senior Matt Srolis placed 99th overall.

“Win as a team, lose as a team,” stated Rivera.

The girls team placed fifth with 158 points and an average time of 21:00.66.

Freshman Ava Klein placed 25th, senior Andrea McDonald placed 27th, Mason Ingallinera placed 36th, Anna Stock placed 37th, Sarah Fazio got 50th, Katrina Trompke placed 63rd and Shay Lee placed 83rd overall.

“It feels great to make it to states this year because I wasn’t able to make it freshman year, it feels great to finish off strong,” said McDonald.

Easton, boys’ team captain, said that the team is excited for yet another trip to Tallahassee.

“We worked very hard to get here, ” he said.

Boy’s coach Bryan Thomas told the Bradenton Herald, “We weren’t running for time today; we were running for place. We knew we had a shot at winning the region, but it was all about breaking up (Newsome’s) very strong pack. The boys showed a lot of maturity and patience.”

Both mustang running teams are now preparing for a trip to Tallahassee for the Florida state meet on Nov. 5 at Apalachee Park.
