(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – “Promposals” have skyrocketed in popularity these past few years, which has resulted in unique ways to ask someone to prom. With the LRHS prom just around the corner Mustangs have definitely been putting their creativity to test when it comes to putting together the perfect “Promposal.”
Junior Grant Weisman asked junior Isabella Demino in a way that would be difficult to turn down.
Everyone sees those signs outside of fast food restaurants that showcase the current deals on food. In this case, the sign outside of Shake Pit in West Bradenton showcased something else. Weisman had to call ahead of time and coordinate with the owners on what he wanted to do. The sign read, “Isabella will you go to prom with me?”
Weisman said, “It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be to ask her.”
Senior Brenden Hadley asked Junior Alana Sherman with her favorite candy. Swedish fish and lifesavers, along with a poster that said, “B-Radd plus Alana, Prom?” was waiting for Sherman after school. There were two checkboxes on the poster, both of which said yes.
“I made sure the only options for her to choose said yes, that way she couldn’t say no. She was so happy she jumped on top of her own car,” said Hadley.
Junior Brendan Brooks asked junior Marissa Oberecker by covering her car with sticky notes. Oberecker walked to her car after work and had a surprise waiting for her. Her car windshield had the word “Prom?” spelled out with sticky notes, and Brooks holding a bouquet of roses. Brooks had to have the help of Oberecker’s friends when it came to figuring out what time she got off, and to distract her.
Brooks said, “It was actually really hard organizing it, because I got confused with the time she got off work. I actually got there really early so I had to wait around for a while. It turned out good in the end, though.”
Senior Read Corley asked junior Kailyn Scully in a way that incorporates their common athletic interests. Scully and Corley are both a part of the LRHS track team and run the 4×800 race. After school one day, Corley gave her one of the relay batons that were used during the race. The baton had the word “prom?” written on it. Corley was holding a poster that said “I RELAY want you to go with me.”
“I like how he got the actual baton that was used in the race and wrote prom on it. I was really excited and I can’t wait to go with him.”
Senior Ray Rafols asked Junior Sophia Masterson in a way that shares their passion for music. Rafols put together an a capella trio cover of “Sh’Boom” by The Crew Cuts. However, he changed the lyrics so that it would be fitting for asking someone to prom. Rafols, along with the help of Kenny Inman and Nico Sanchez, rehearsed in secrecy during their Jazz band class. They decided what they were going to wear in advance, coordinated with teachers, and surprised Masterson in her first period class with the performance followed by flowers and chocolates.
“I was nervous but more of a nervous-excited to ask her. No one really does this sort of thing anymore and I figured a girl like her would appreciate it,” said Rafols.
Junior Zack Masengale asked junior Sam Illes to prom in a semi-permanent way. Masengale got a professional spray tan, with the word “prom?” tanned onto his chest. He walked into the middle of Illes’s colorguard class and said, “If you don’t go to prom with me I might just have a TANtrum.”
Illes said, “Honestly I knew he would do something crazy but I wasn’t expecting this in a million years.”
Senior Jared Doniger asked senior Rebecca Deibert to prom with her own face. Deibert walked to her car in the LRHS parking lot to find out that it’s been covered with big blowup photographs of her face taped all over it. Doniger was standing next to her car with flowers and a sign that read, “Face it, we should go to prom together.” Deibert was distracted after school ended so that she would be distracted and Doniger would have time to put everything together.
“It was really funny because people were watching, and I didn’t expect it at all. My teacher held me after class and I got pretty mad about that,” said Deibert.
Senior Jennifer Miranda was asked by Gerry Vargas with red solo cups, and food from her favorite restaurant, Chipotle. Miranda arrived at a friend’s house to a sign that told her to follow the cups inside. With her favorite song playing, she followed the trail to the backyard. Vargas spelt out the word prom with the cups and was holding Chipotle, and a sign that said, “Won’t let you go to prom solo.”
Miranda said, “I was really confused at first and thought it was a joke but when I realized what was happening I was really excited. I also got Chipotle which was awesome.”
