(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – April 22 signifies Earth Day, celebrated in 192 countries around the world. This year marks its 45th anniversary. On this day, events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Some Mustangs have their own traditions they follow each year.
“Every year my family plants a new flower in our garden behind our house. It sounds nerdy but it is a really fun thing to do,” said senior Amy Bulfin.
The first Earth Day was in 1970 after damage was done by a 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.
Earth Day ceremonies remind everyone to take care of the planet. All Americans can all help the environment by doing small things daily. For instance, not littering, picking up trash, carpooling, and recycling.
“I think you should plant a tree on Earth Day and follow the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle),” said LRHS chemistry teacher Tammy Harper.
