(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The Mustang boys and girls track teams both won district titles on Wednesday, April 15 at Clearwater High School.
Mustang girls finished with a total of 140 points to 82 for runner-up Sarasota. The Mustang boys finished with 128.5 points to 97 for the second place Sailors.
Head Coach Mark Napier has coached for Lakewood for a long time now and said he’s proud of his athletes.
“District level is a great accomplishment,” he said. “We have a strong women’s team. I am proud of the team.”
Mustang district champions included sophomores John Rivera in the boys 800 meter run and Sam Jackson in the boys discuss, juniors Reide Ryans in the 100 meter hurdles, Kailyn Scully in the 800 meter run, seniors Talia Falcoo in the girl’s high jump and long jump, Rheya Jackson in the girl’s triple jump and the girls 4X100 meter relay team.
Napier says his favorite thing is when a student accomplishes something that he or she thought was impossible. Senior Craig Bein has done track for three years. His favorite events are the 4 by 1, 100, and the 200.
“I like sprinting and giving everything that I have when I run. I got 3rd place in the 4 X 1 relay and the 200,” said Bein.
Bein enjoys track because he gets to spend time with his friends and improve his running skills.
Senior Hunter Napier’s favorite event is the High Jump.
“I have done sports ever since I was little,” he said. “I really like track because I can improve my time and hang out with friends.”
Scully ran the 800 meter in 2 minutes and 20.54 seconds.
“Track is my favorite sport because it is exciting to see your hard work paid off. The atmosphere is very high-paced and everyone is doing their own thing. It’s nice to be around people who enjoy the same sport as you.”
Scully has been running track since she was a sophomore and plans on doing it next year.
