County food rules still sparking discussion

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – A new rule at LRHS and across Manatee County has students agitated and hungry, which is not a good combination for kids in school.

For two years a rule has been in place that said students couldn’t share unhealthy foods over 100 calories and teachers were not allowed to provide such items. Schools were only recently told about this rule and are now required to enforce it.

For the past week students have been wondering if cafeteria food would need to change or if senior privileges and the senior luncheon at the end of the year would be lost.

LRHS senior class adviser Ann Fleury, who puts together all these events, said “We will still have some senior privileges. I just have to work with the food rules. We are changing the senior lunch-in to a senior dinner, too.”

Assistant Principal Valencia Lowen said, “I agree with healthier foods being enforced I just with there was a little bit more slack with the rule.”

The students around LRHS don’t seem to be affected. Senior Hunter Cate said, “I don’t really care about the new food rules, my friends and I still share food with one another and eat in class.”
