(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The success of the Mustang athletic teams has been recognized by the Florida High School Activities Association. Lakewood Ranch finished fourth in the state in the Fall Lay Sunshine All-Sports Cup standings.
Lakewood Ranch compiled scores of 50.5 in class 7A for the Lay Cup which represents the top teams in overall standings for all sports combined. Mustangs boys teams scored 36.5 to finish second overall in the state.
Athletic Director Shawn Trent says “We earned fourth after Fall, although classification changed things a bit, but we’re still on the hunt in the end and we’ll be all right.”
The score a team receives is based on a specific number of points earned during district, as well as state championships. Points are awarded to a school based on its finish in the FHSAA state series competition per sport per classification.
Points were awarded as follows: 20 for state champion, 12 for state runner-up, nine for state semifinalists, six through fifth and eighth places, and three for ninth through sixteenth places. Schools also get a two-point bonus for winning a district or regional championship, though points are also deducted for unsporting conduct.
When two or more schools tie for a place in a sport, points for those places are shared equally.
