(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – It’s common knowledge that Mustangs excel at sports and academics, but many people may not realize the school has a champion car designer as well.

LRHS sophomore Aly Cote poses with her trophies and award-winning car.

Last month, LRHS sophomore Aly Cote competed alongside other high school students at the World Formula One Challenge in Austin, Texas, finishing second place. She also won first place among female competitors.

“Formula One for school is a competition for students that is based off real Formula One racing,” says Cote. “Ever since sixth grade, technology has interested me. I like it because its going to be the future of careers in the U.S., and the world. It also can take you all over the world.”

At the event, five-person teams constructed a 6 by 2 inch racer. Teams were placed into brackets and completed time trials to advance. Each team also had to complete a pit display, board set-up, portfolio, and verbal presentation. Cote competed alongside four Southeast High students.

In eighth grade, Cote was approached by high school students from Braden River and asked if she was interested in designing and manufacturing cars.

“At the time, I had already been involved with TSA designing dragsters, so I decided to hop on board.

“There were a few teachers who definitely pushed me to compete in Austin. Mr. [Justin] Erickson from Haile Middle School motivated me to get involved with TSA,” he said.  “I’d also like to thank our advisors of the trip who came with us for all the inspiration they gave, Mr. [Richard] Platt, and Mrs. [Margi] Nanney. I’d also like to give a big thanks to my family for supporting me through everything.”

LRHS technology teacher Greg McGrew praised Cote’s work, “When I heard Aly had won 2nd place, I was super excited.”

Cote is currently interested in F1 racing for a career, and is paving her way to her dream and success.
