New LRHS Assistant Principal Roy Shaw settles into his new office.

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS has gained an new member to the administration staff. Roy Shaw started as assistant principal earlier this month.

Shaw was the principal at Myakka City Elementary, but decided that it was time to take on something else. He explained how difficult it was leaving Myakka City, and says that he’ll miss the school, but is extremely excited to be at LRHS.

Shaw grew up in Hardee county and taught elementary, middle, and high school science and physical education there. He has 26 years of experience as an educator, ten as a teacher and 16 as an administrator.

Shaw worked at Braden River and Nolan Middle Schools, and Myakka as an administrator.

In Shaw’s free time he likes to hunt, fish, work on his farm, scallop, and read.

“I never miss the chance to go scalloping,” said Shaw. Shaw added that his favorite book is A Land Remembered by Patrick Smith.

As for family, Shaw has two daughters whom he loves greatly. Kaitlyn is a senior, and Rachel is in sixth grade, both in Hardee County. Both are actively involved in 4-H and FFA.

Shaw said LRHS’s reputation drew him to the school.

“LRHS has an awesome reputation, and it’s one of the best schools in the county. The kids and staff are good.”

The difference between elementary students and high school students is big, and Shaw looks forward to working with older students.

“With elementary students the conversation is limited. However, with high school students, the conversation is engaging. High school students are witty, reasonable, and refreshing.”

The thing Shaw is most excited about this school year is the chance to work with the students.

“I’m most excited for the chance to be a part of your lives. Students don’t always remember their elementary or middle school principals, but with high school it’s different. There is a connection made between students and their high school principal, and that’s something that I’m looking forward to.”
