(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS’s Halloween blood drive was a big success as the school collected 108 units of blood.

“This blood drive was fun because of it being Halloween. It was a good turn out, many students donated,” said Maria Whalen, science teacher and blood drive and HOSA coordinator.

About 20 students were turned away because of low iron. To help increase chances of high iron the blood drive committee and HOSA recommend donors, for at least a week in advanced eat vegetables and meats such as:

• Broccoli
• String beans

• Collards
• Kale
• Chard
• Lamb
• Ham
• Turkey
• Chicken
• Veal
• Pork
• Dried beef
• Liver
• Avoid fatty foods
• Eggs (any style)

Also to drink an extra 16 oz. of water,non-carbonated and nonalcoholic fluids before donating.
